Soaring Safari 1999 Week6

25.Juli - 27.Juli 1999

25. July:

.

Stehle and Helmut and a great flight from Bowers field Airport, WA to Redmond Airport, OR. Along the Cascades flying over Mt Rainer, see Mt St Helens, above Mt Adams (12 276 ft), Mt Hood (11 239 ft) and Mt. Jefferson (10 497 ft).
When Helmut landed on Redmond Airport he blew the tire of the main wheel and Stehle had to land on the second runway. The maintenance people on the airport were very helpful and towed us to the General Avation Area.

26. July : We put a new tire on the DG400 and Helmut and Reiner were planning to fly today. Another incident. Just after Helmut was airbornde the axel of the starter motor broke off and went into the fly wheel. The motor stopped immediately and Helmut managed to land the glider safely on a old taxiway. Pilot and Glider ok.

Only seconds later Helmut would have ended up in the trees.

Reiner had problems with the Ventus engine as well. The Ventus wasn´t climbing very good in the beginning but it got better. While Helmut and Stehle derigged the DG400 and put it in the trailer, Reiner flew to the Three Sisters and to Crater Lake. He had a very enjoyable flight, great scenery. He landed safely at Siskiyou Airport in a beutiful valley in California, next to Mt Shasta.
